Carbon Steel is the most widely used metal alloy which is used in a variety of equipment. It is made with a combination of two elements mostly iron and carbon. Other elements are highly present in different quantities to affect its properties. Elements present are copper of 0.60%, manganese of 1.65% and silicon of 0.60%.
The alloy has less carbon content which will have the same properties as iron i.e. soft but easily formed. Low contents of carbon also reduce the melting point of the alloy and resistance to general temperature. There are typical compositions of carbon steel which are available in different types-
• Mild carbon steel- it is the alloy that contains contents of carbon and manganese. This can be put into the shape easily and the surface is also hardened through carburizing.
• Medium carbon steel- it is having low carbon and little high contents of manganese which balances ductility and strength. This also has good resistance to wear that is used in the large parts of forging and car parts.
• High carbon steel- high carbon and low manganese contents are present in the alloy. That is mostly used for the high-strength and spring wires.
• Very high carbon steel- this contains only carbon content which is mostly used to produce the specific atomic and molecular microstructures.
